Jymn Magon: «Know your hero!»
Our guest from the USA, creator of the cartoon series “DuckTales”, Jymn Magon told us how to create a story for an animated film. He started his career at Walt Disney where he worked on such world-famous cartoon series as “Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears”, “Goof Troop” and “Chip ‘n’ Dale”.
Every story has a setup, conflict and resolution, Jymn said. The setup tells the viewer who the main character is and what he wants. At this phase it is important for the creator to know all of this, for it otherwise becomes impossible to plan the main character’s follow-up actions. The “conflict” forces him or her to meet various obstacles that are growing bigger and bigger. At the “resolution” phase the character finally gets what he really needs. But probably it is not what he wanted at the very beginning.
Magon noticed that besides the main plot, the story may have some more storylines that lead to the culmination at the exact same moment as the main line. He also advised the creators to see what happens to similar characters in other stories.
It is important to make a cartoon with a simple plot because children perceive information visually. While watching they learn certain moral principles.
Do not forget: tomorrow at 10AM Jymn Magon is holding the workshop “Dissecting Animation Comedy”. We welcome everyone who wants to talk to the scriptwriter, producer and director of the popular cartoons.
