What they taught us first day long

What they taught us first day long

Summing up the results of the educational program of the festival first day we can call it a cinema day. All expert presentations, except for those by Vadim Epstein and Vadim Smakhtin, in this or that way was correlated to movies.

It all started with aт excursus into the history of cinema by Alena Sycheva, film expert . She talked about the film language шт times of coming-to-be in the world, that is why that all was about the era of silent films only. And of course the Lumiere brothers were mentioned. Not everybody knows that for them movies were just a matter of commerce but not passion, as, for example, to Georges Méliès. His films are ironic theatrical sketches that later were replaced by the American cinema. It's completely amazing that that time everything was clear without even a word.

Boris Lutsyuk, supervisor, director and head of the Amalgama VFX studio, brought everybody back to present times. He told the guests how the most spectacular effects of disaster movie "Underground" had been created. Filming in a real underground was prohibited for the reason not to create bad image to the underground. For filming specially 5 underground cars were bought.
During 80 days of shooting (4 of which were the train crash scene shooting), the team was in a rather precarious position: fire, tons of water, complex concrete and metal structures. But the most terrible moments were not real: they were created using computer graphics. 5 studios worked at the creation of the  film graphic component directed by Boris for more than a year. The longest working day of the main supervisor lasted for 22 hours. It was a day for watching up all the material. But the effects look absolutely realistic!

Vadim Epstein, media artist, a leading VJ, founder and artistic director of the in[visible] studio,  told how to create modern media installations. "This is a story about media installations, as we understand them. What do they contain, what are they made from, what are they and what are they for, the overall structure - said Vadim. - This is serious work as for the left hemisphere, which requires knowledge of many technical aspects, and for the right one as well, which allows you to use these techniques to create such beauty".
But let's continue the topic of movies. Vasily Filatov, sound designer, Kinodelo.PRO project founder and New Time Investment CEO taught during his maste class stages of movies producing.

He began his lecture with a question to the audience: "How many people is going to shoot a movie? Are there anyone who wants to become a producer or cameraman?". And you know what? On a few square meters of a hall there turned out to be a dozen of future producers, a little less cameramen and designers, and even one script writer.

Vasily would have received the award for "Best interpretation of the terms" if such a one existed. He explained clearly who is a producer and what he or she is for - it's a person who knows how to solve problems on the set. He talked about the different stages of producing - preproduction, production, postproduction - and their pitfalls. Our expert ended up his master class talking about positioning: what to do with the film when it is shot, how to make sure that it is watched by people and by what number of them, how to make a film without a budget. If now you realized that you've missed a lot of interesting things? Do not waste your time - come to the festival this weekend!
