Many people think that Freezelight is some new technique. In fact similar experiments with light were held  in the 30s of the XX century. It was called differently: light drawing, painting with the light, lyuminography. But the sense was quite the same: a photographer managed to capture some bands of light left by light bulbs using a slow shutter speed

 

In 2008 Artem and Roman created "Freezelight" art project. This word, "Freezelight", in time has became a nominal one and now is used as a term for painting with the light. The difference between previous experimenters and those made by guys is that Artem and Roman have not accidential results but know for sure what they can have on the photo and so they create masterpieces.

 

You can use any camera you like for painting with the light, but it's better to use digital SLRs. You will have to convert it to manual settings and learn how to set such ones as: shutter speed, aperture and sensitivity. However, even having a compact digital camera only, you can create a picture in the Freezelight technique. You just have to use the night mode. "We started to shoot at a very simple camera, and those pictures are now owned by several museums in Russia", — guys told the audience.

 

To get a clear photo one need to use a tripod. It is important to fix the background, to wear dark clothing, which is not visible on the photo. What to paint with? You can use any source of light: diode lamps, incandescent lamps, even a fire. Everything depends on the artist's goal. Artem and Roman showed how to create pictures in the Freezelight technique. "We've made up kind of hit parade of the images people draw at first. These are: emoticons, houses, hearts and other plain figures", — they noted.

 

Guys told the ways to avoid beginners' mistakes and explained everything using the examples of those who also wanted to try light drawing. They painted a fantasy picture called "cat that eats an iron" upon the audience guidance.
